Admission Requirements - Nursing

 

LPN/RN to BSN Completion Track
 
RN/BSN completion track students who seek admission to the baccalaureate program must meet the same prerequisite program and degree requirements as generic students. Applicants are evaluated on an individual basis.
 
Admission Requirements-LPN/LPTN
 
Applicants who have a current, unencumbered license as a practical nurse (LPN) or psychiatric technician nurse (LPTN) are eligible to apply for admission to the upper division with advanced placement through specific validations and the Arkansas Articulation Agreement. To apply for admission, refer to Admission, Upper Division Requirements, steps 1-7 (p.13). In addition, the following also applies:
  1. Must be a graduate of an approved Arkansas LPN or LPTN program or out-of-state NLN accredited program.
  2. Enroll in and successfully complete the transition course "Concepts and Processes of Nursing Care" course (N3202) as a pre-requisite to advanced placement in upper-division nursing.
  3. May be awarded credit equivalent up to 9 semester credit hours in nursing through articulation.
  4. Applicants who have graduated from nursing school 12-60 months prior to entering R.N./B.S.N. program must submit an employee verification letter as part of their admission packet.
  5. Must submit a copy of a current, unencumbered LPN/LPTN license (updated appropriately).
The student may follow the curriculum sequence plan as a generic student. When all prerequisite courses are completed, either through matriculation or by articulation, the student may enter N2802, Medical-Surgical Nursing Care, in the second semester, sophomore year and continue in the prescribed sequence to graduation.
 
LPNs will receive credit for having taken N2301 Introduction to Nursing Care in lieu of previous course work. However, in the absence of active employment, as specified in the Arkansas Nursing Articulation Model (See page 22) LPTN's may be required to take the following Excelsior (Regents) College examination to validate previous learning:
 
Fundamentals of Nursing Care (N2602) - Excelsior Examination # 403
 
Excelsior examinations are administered at Sylvan Technology Centers. Informational packets that contain an application form are available in the Department of Nursing. Students can also obtain general information and register for the examination by contacting Excelsior College at 1-888-RCE-XAMS or www.regents.edu.
 
SCORING: For the advanced standing tests, the minimal passing score is 45 for the Regents Examination. The exams may be taken no more that two (2) times. Regents Examination scores may not be more that five (5) years old at the time of admission to the B.S.N. program.
 
Admission Requirements - RN

 

Applicants who are licensed as Registered Nurses (RN) through an A.D.N. or Diploma program are eligible to apply for advanced placement admission to the upper division.
 
To apply for admission, refer to Admission, Upper Division Requirements,steps 1-7 (p.13). In addition, the applicant:
  1. Must be a graduate of an associate degree or diploma program which was NLN accredited at the time of graduation;
  2. May be awarded credits equivalent to 31 semester credit hours in nursing through articulation (see page 23);
  3. Who has graduated from nursing school 12-60 months prior to entering the BSN program, must submit an employee verification letter as part of their admission packet.
  4. Must have a current, unencumbered RN license on file in the nursing office (updated appropriately).
The RN completes all the course work as outlined for the freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Credit for: N2301 Introduction to Nursing Care, N2602 Fundamentals of Nursing Care, N2802 Medical-Surgical Nursing Care, N3801Maternal-Child Nursing Care, N3603 Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Care is achieved by articulation (see below). The applicant then enters clinical nursing classes in the fall semester, senior year, after successfully completing N3202 Concepts and Processes of Nursing Care, N2303 Basic Pharmacology in Nursing Practice, 2302 Pathophysiology, and N3303 Nursing Research and Data Analysis.
 
In the absence of active employment, as stipulated in the Arkansas Nursing Articulation Model (See pp. 22-23).
 
Re-admission to the Nursing Program
 
A break in enrollment, for any reason, will require submission of an application for re-admission. any conditions stipulated at the time of suspension must be met before the student can re-enter the program. At least one year must elapse before the student may appeal for re-entry. Re-admission will be granted on a space available basis. The student is subject to currenty Department of Nursing and University policies in effect at the time of re-admission.
 
Students re-admitted into the program must repeat any previously completed, upper-divsion nuring course (s) greater than five (5) years old. Thus, all students who have been admitted to upper-division nursing must complete the nursing program within five years after their first admission to upper division.
 
Re-admission procedures:
  1. Submit an application for re-admission.
  2. Return the completed form to the chairperson's office in the Department of Nursing.
  3. Request that the Registrar's Office provide current and complete transcripts to the Department.
  4. Submit all forms and transcripts to the chairperson of the Department of Nursing before October 15 or March 15, depending on the semester for which re-admission is sought. An evaluation and decision will be made by the appropriate committee of the Department of Nursing. The student will be notified of their admission status in writing.
Re-admission will be denied if:
  1. CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is below 2.5 exclusive of failed nursing course.
  2. Student has received a final grade of lower than "C" twice in the same nursing course.
  3. Available slots in the class have been filled by first time students seeking admission with no deficits.
  4. All prerequisite courses are not successfully completed.
