Mission

Mission

The mission of the University College is to assist all incoming students in making the transition to the collegiate environment, and to provide the necessary academic support programs and services to facilitate their satisfactory progress toward the achievement of their educational and career goals. Since its inception in 1982, University College has been central to UAPB's commitment to the persistence and success of undergraduate students.

University College is committed to the idea that all university students should pursue a program containing elements of a liberal education, that they should encounter and become familiar with the major fields of endeavor and achievement, that they should be aware of value and value judgments in those areas, and that they should be knowledgable of contemporary trends and issues in modern civilization. The University college student is required to acquire an understanding of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and develop communicative and quantitative skills as required for success in college. More especially, the core curriculum is designed to provide the basis for successful studies in a particular field or major.
 
University College also is committed to providing placement and enhancement services designed to assist freshmen in making a successful transition to the University. Professional advisors are available throughout the year to provide academic advising and consultation that will enable students to become acquainted with program requirements, resources, university policies and procedures, and decide on majors and appropriate courses. Tutorial services are also available for students needing reinforcement or assistance in reading, mathematics and English. The goal is to provide students with the support they need to succeed at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
University College's mission and goals are achieved through the various programs and units that comprise the division:
  • Basic Academic Services
  • Academic Skills and Developmental Services
  • TRIO Student Support Services
  • General Studies Degree Program
  • Sponsorship of student organizations: Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, Association for Non-Traditional Students (ANTS), Orientation Assistants Club, Freshman Class
All first-time entering freshmen officially admitted to the University as a degree-seeking students are automatically enrolled in University College. Transfer students who have not completed the equivalent of UAPB's general education requirements are also enrolled in University College. All students remain in University College until they formally exit.
To exit University College, a student must meet the following criteria:
  • Completion of all general education requirements
  • Completion of Arkansas Assessment of General Education (CAAP/Rising Junior Exam) or University College Exit Exam
  • Completion of the English Proficiency Exam
  • Process Exit Form
