Dr. Rufus L. Caine Endowment Fund

The Rufus L. Caine Endowed Chair is a fundraising activity undertaken by friends, former students, and family members of Dr. Caine. The purpose is to provide much needed funding in the areas of health and allied health professions (Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Osteopathy, Optometry, Physical Therapy, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) and to honor Dr. Caine for his years of dedication to the sciences.

An increasing number of science students are choosing to pursue training for health and allied health professions after graduation. It is, therefore, imperative that the training, counseling, and other support needed by these students to succeed in their desire to enter health and allied health careers is provided.

The goal of the endowed chair is:
  • To increase the number of UAPB graduates going into health and allied health careers and increase minority representation in health and allied health careers.
There are several objectives:
  • To identify and recruit students with the potential of pursuing health and allied health careers;
  • To provide students with information, counseling and instruction pertinent to their prerequisite academic training;
  • To assist students in the application process for admissions to health and allied health training;
  • To acquire and maintain permanent records on the identification, academic progress, and admission into relevant programs;
  • To bring recruiters to campus from schools that provide health and allied health training;
  • To acquire and maintain all the audiovisual, tutorial, and other materials;
  • To coordinate and assist the activity of the campus committee; and
  • To foster the atmosphere on campus for a potential Department of Allied Health Sciences.
Dr. Caine’s life, both personally and professionally, was characterized by his courage, commitment, and love for his community. He had a special love for UAPB and his students. He taught, nurtured, and assisted them in their educational endeavors. For 41 years, Dr. Caine was devoted to teaching and preparing students for medical health and science related professions. He assisted the college/university in graduating more Arkansas students who entered the medical profession than any other black college in the nation prior to the early 1960s.

Your tax-deductible donation will enable the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) to establish the institution’s first endowed chair. The endowed chair will increase the prestige of UAPB and it will provide a means for recruiting a significant talent to enhance the academic areas of Biology and Zoology. Additionally, talented and gifted students will be recruited to train in theses disciplines. Access to quality healthcare for all citizens is a national concern, and it is imperative that the number of minorities in health professional increase. Because UAPB is a national leader in educating minorities, it is only logical that this contribution or pledge your financial support today. Your tax-deductible donation will not only help to establish The Dr. Rufus L. Caine Endowed Chair, it will enable UAPB to receive matching funds from the federal government and corporation that match employee donations and corporations for other programs and activities.

The goal is to raise $1.5 million between now and November 10, 2004.
