The main purpose of the UAPB Adult Education Department is to offer free classes and related services to persons interested in attaining a GED high school diploma. Classes are offered 11 months of the school year at these locations in Pine Bluff: Dawson-Hicks Building on the UAPB campus, Arkansas Workforce Center at Regency Square, Southeast Arkansas Department of Community Punishment, and Jefferson County Probation Services at Jefferson Square.

Registration is free. Applications are accepted on Monday and Tuesday of each week. Call 870-575-8202 for details.

Program applicants must be 18 years of age, provide a picture identification (such as Arkansas Driver’s License), complete the official registration form, and complete the entrance test.

Testing (which is also free) is necessary and is used to let the prospective student know his current educational level and class placement. The recommended passing level for the GED/Arkansas High School diploma is grade 8 and the fifth month. Reviews for the GED diploma begin at the student’s level (whether it is 8.5 or above or below that point). GED testing guidelines may be found at http://ace.arkansas.gov/ged.htm. Free testing also includes the pre-GED and GED tests.

The GED credential is based on five tests which cover reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics. The tests also measure communication, information processing, problem solving, and critical-thinking skills. The GED tests are a nationally recognized measure of high school knowledge and skills.

Adult Education classes meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11:55 a.m.; Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The student may attend morning, afternoon, or evening classes (or any combination of these hours).

Special schedules are arranged for English as a Second Language, Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (WAGE), Computer Literacy and other basic skills classes. See the last paragraph for course descriptions of each.

Textbooks are furnished free for in-class use. Other materials such as pencils and scrap paper are also supplied.

Qualified instructors are utilized in all GED classes and other course offerings. Instructors must have a current Arkansas Teacher’s License and must hold the minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Most current instructors have Master’s degrees in Adult Education and public school teaching experience.
