Preserving the History of the University and the Arkansas Delta

The University Museum and Cultural Center is home to the Keepers of the Spirit: The L. A. Davis, Sr. Historical Collection that documents the more than 130 year history of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Having its origin as Branch Normal College, later Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College, the only state supported institution of higher education for blacks, the University has undergone various name changes, weathered many adversaries and yet through it all it has never lost sight of its mission to educate the “poorer classes” of Arkansas. Founded in the Arkansas Delta in 1873, there is a direct linkage between the saga of this institution and the historical, educational and cultural experiences of the people of this region of the state.

In addition to the Keepers of the Spirit exhibit, the Museum also features a large collection of photographs, catalogs, yearbooks, letters, artifacts, portraits and other ephemera that document the lives of the people who helped to shape the history of the University and the Delta. The story of this institution is told through a series of large scale photographic panels with text, memorabilia and other artifacts.

The purpose of the Museum is to collect, preserve, and celebrate the rich history of the University and Arkansas Delta. It is the aim of the center to educate the general public about the legacy of this venerable institution and the significant events and accomplishments of the people of the Delta through exhibits, forums and collections. The Museum also offers innovative educational programs and changing exhibits on the mezzanine level designed to increase awareness of the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans.

The University Museum and Cultural Center, established in the Spring of 2005, is self supporting and depends solely on grants and contributions of donors.
