Theatre Announces 2009-2010 Season

The John McLinn Ross Players bring back to Pine Bluff the excitement for theatre. The 2009-2010 Roots Season will build on the momentum of last year’s Homecoming Season, which brought theatre back home to UAPB in the form of three full productions, several special guests, workshops and successes at two national theatre conferences including the many competitive awards bestowed upon the talent in the John McLinn Ross Players. The aptly dubbed Roots Season explores the beginnings of several movements in African-American history and the upcoming year promises to be even more enriching for both the theatre program and the John McLinn Ross Players.

Homegirls by Karen Evans focuses on the relationships of five young college women as they maintain their friendships and find their way into adulthood against the trials and tribulations of the Civil Rights Movement. During Black History Month, family audiences will bounce and bop along with the clever and entertaining hero who spins records and tales that explore the elements of hip-hop and echo of the African Griot in Zomo the Rabbit: A Hip-Hop Creation Myth by Psalmayene 24. The final production of the season is Spunk: Three Tales by Zora Neale Hurston adapted by George C. Wolfe with music by Chic Street Man. It is three tales told by the anthropologist and Harlemite novelist Hurston which allow the audience to ride the proverbial A-Train into the world and rhythms of the Harlem Renaissance.

All productions are directed by Cheryl Collins, M.F.A., Director of Theatre. School matinees offered for all productions and subscription packages are on sale now!
