MinorityCenter for Excellence in Mathematics and Science
During the fall semester of 1998, the Math and Science Center at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) was established and became a functional unit—providing services in mathematics and science education to area school districts in Southeastern Arkansas. It works closely with the Arkansas Department of Education in the area of academic distress and districts having problems in mathematics and science teaching and learning. Over the years, a myriad of services have been provided many teachers and administrators in area districts which include: teacher and administrator workshops, training seminars, staff development, supervision and judging science fair projects, classroom visitations, and donations of teaching materials, microscopes and manipulatives.
The Center has amassed a wealth of educational materials, which are available and free of charge to area district teachers upon request. As a result, the districts have become increasingly aware of the services provided by the Center, and requests for assistance from teachers and administrators have increased significantly. It is the Center’s commitment—as stipulated in its mission—to provide educational services to area districts and continue to respond positively to their requests.
