MISSION
The School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences is an integral part of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). It fulfills its 1890 Land-Grant mission through education, research, Extension and public service. We continually challenge ourselves to improve the quality of life for people of Arkansas, the nation, and the global society, with an emphasis on rural development. The attainment of skills necessary to live and work effectively and successfully is the goal. The Office of International Programs, within the School, is integral to the attainment of global effectiveness and success.
RESEARCH
Faculty engage in a wide array of research problems designed to solve environmental, social and economic problems of the state and world. Research programs provide students opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research projects that expose them to scientific methods of inquiry and allow them to contribute to the creation of knowledge.
FACULTY
Of the nearly 53 on-campus instructional, research and Extension faculty, 90 percent hold doctorate degrees from leading institutions in the country. This faculty is augmented by research technicians and other research support staff as well as a number of scientists on loan from the United States Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Geologic Survey-Biological Research Division (USGS-BRD). Faculty diversity in gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, academic background and experiences creates a multicultural milieu that helps students acquire a global perspective on environmental, social and economic issues.
FACILITIES
Fifteen instructional and research laboratories equipped with high-tech, scientific equipment support the academic program. Three farm sites with 1,134 acres of land and 112 earthen aquatic research ponds provide research and demonstration farm activities and teaching resources at UAPB, in Lonoke and Marianna, Arkansas. Experiential learning opportunities exist at the UAPB farm with experimental animals and crops, greenhouses with growth chambers, a poultry research laboratory, two fish hatcheries and a value-added fisheries demonstration unit. A 25,000 sq. ft., $36 million, Applied Sciences Lab Building provides dry and wet teaching labs for agriculture and aquaculture. A functional nursery/daycare facility provides hands-on learning environment for human sciences’ students.
RESOURCE ROOM
The SAFHS Resource Room, located in O.R. Holiday Hall, provides more than 900 volumes of books, journals, federal documents, self-help video and audio tapes, computers and other resources for student and faculty use. The Resource Room is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
